The major aim of the expedition was to continue the exploration of the chemisty, physics and sedimentology of the Victoria Land lakes, and dry internal drainage basins. In detail the programme was:

(1) To examine Lake Wilson in the Brown Hills to see if it contained permanent water. If it di contain water, temperatures and conductivities were to be measures, water samples taken for subsequent chemical and isotropic measurements, the bathymetry of the lake and ice thickness was to be measured and sediment samples taken.

(2) To examine Lake Wellman and another as yet un named lake in the Darwin Mountains.

(3) To examine a large ice and water free depression in the Darwin Mountains

(4) To make a bathymetric and sediment survey of Lake Fryxell in the Taylor Valley.

(5) To attempt to recover a long core from Lake Bonney in the Taylor Valley.

(6) To examine Trough Lake in the Koettlitz Glacial region to see if contained water.

Supplementary work included an examination of the surrounding terrain of each of the lake basins for geomorphological studies and search for datable deposits resulting from higher lake levels.
