Event NameDSIR Antarctic Division| Caretakers of Historic Huts| 1971-1972AbstractWe were the first of the caretakers to be given specific tasks of dealing with some of the historical artefacts| food dumps| and debris around the huts at Cape Royds and Cape Evans. This was responsible work and we feel that the idea of sending members of the Antarctic Society| with the necessary historical background to do this work| to be an excellent one. Almost all of the one and a half tons of debris disposed of comprised broken glass| rusted empty tins and unrecognisable debris. Anything recognisable (such as box ends) was retained (over 500 items). In addition to packing in cargoes and stores| which was the major part of our work| we continued the work of predecessors in carrying out maintenance (especially of the 'Discovery' Hut)| and inspection of the huts| a penguin count at the Royds rookery| and acted as guides to visitors.PersonnelR McElreaH BursonLocationsCape RoydsCape EvansScott BaseGeolocation[1] Position[2] Position[3] PositionSeason1971-1972
