VUWAE 1’2’3 and 6 had investigated the bedrock and glacial geology of the ice free Taylor, Wright and Victoria Valleys whereas VUWAE 5 and 7 had carried out detailed geochemical and physical investigations on Lake Vanda and Lake Bonney respectively.
From the achievements of VUWAE 5 and 7’ it was clear that further investigation was needed of as many large lakes as possible within these 'dry' valleys.
Consequently a large expedition with a complex programme was organised for the 1963-64 season.
